POSITION SUMMARY

Working under the direction of our orthopedic providers and protocols, triages patient care phone calls and coordinates patient care.  The Triage Nurse establishes a patient friendly system to facilitate communication between patients and BJIT. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education / Training: 
Earned a nursing diploma or degree from a college or university
License by the State of TN

Workplace Experience:        
At least one year of experience in medical office environment

Equipment and Skills Training: 
Must be competent in the use of computer systems to include Allscripts and Microsoft Office.

Physical Environment:  
Medical office environment.

Physical Effort:   
Must be able to sit, stand, communicate, in English, both orally and in writing and lift over 20 pounds

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Performs general telephone triage of patient medical problems regarding pain, medication effectiveness, surgery site problems treatment plans, medication refills, and other patient or physician issues. 
  2. Handles a high volume of incoming and outgoing calls, including calls to and from physicians, patients, patient’s family members, pharmacies, and various other health related agents.
  3. Gathers complete and appropriate medical information to assist the medical staff and eliminate unnecessary return calls. 
  4. Uses active listening skills, approved protocols, and evidence based practice to provide patient centered care. 
  5. Prioritizes more urgent patient problems and   recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms of patients that require immediate referral to the physician.
  6. Provides patient notification and education regarding results of various tests and plans of care.  
  7. Provides effective patient and family education.
  8. Follows prescription refill policy to ensure organized and coordinated care for each patient.  Exercises good judgment in the identification of potential problems such as medication side effects, adverse interactions, non-compliance with the medical plan of care and repeated failure to keep scheduled appointments. Verifies pharmacy information in Allscripts and prescription orders with pharmacist if question or concern develops with e-prescription. Completes prior authorization requests for medications.
  9. Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to process information in an accurate, timely and consistent manner.
  10. Completes all documentation into the electronic medical record timely, accurately, and concisely.
  11. Supports departmental and corporate strategic plans and ensure successful implementation.  Supports company and department quality assurance initiatives and goals. 
  12. Responsible for backing up other employees, which may include changing stations or assignments.
