POSITION SUMMARY

Provides casting services to the patients of Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee.  

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education / Training:
High School diploma or equivalent, required. High School diploma or equivalent, graduation from a Medical Assistant program and coursework in applying casts and other orthopedic devices.

Workplace Experience:
One year experience as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Orthopedic Surgical Technician or other related profession. Prior experience as a Casting Technician is preferred.
 
Equipment and Skills Training:
This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic devices, bracing and casting related activities. Clinical work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed patient care professional. Competent in the use of standard medical office equipment and medical supplies including computers with appropriate medical software, facsimile machines, copying machines and telephones.

Physical Environment:
Family medical practice office.

Physical Effort:
Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds; constant/repetitive standing; requires normal, correctable vision and hearing, and the ability to accurately discern color as necessary to perform job functions. Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Applies casts using a variety of materials including plaster and synthetic casting materials and high and low temperature plastics.
  2. Applies and adjusts orthopedic devices such as braces, splints, and compression stockings.
  3. Arranges, assembles and adjusts traction equipment.
  4. Removes sutures and staples.
  5. Assists in Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery.
  6. Cleans exam and procedure tables, work areas and tools according to schedules. Cleans general equipment (wheelchairs, IV poles, etc.) according to guidelines.
  7. Stocks exam and procedure rooms according to schedules and as needed. Inventories specialty items. Initiates reorder of supplies as needed.
  8. Performs appropriate documentation and patient education related to cast or splinting and as directed by physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant resident or Registered Nurse.
  9. Arranges for take home supplies for patients.
  10. Observes universal precautions.
  11. Communicates effectively with patients/families and the clinic team in a manner that promotes positive working relationships.
  12. Maintains work area and personal appearance in a way that reflects professionalism and demonstrates to our patients, visitors and coworkers the importance we place on cleanliness, orderliness and safety.
  13. Completes additional duties and special tasks in a timely fashion.
