Job Summary

Assist in the coordination of planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care in the Oncology Department in timely   and accurate manner while meeting individual physical, psychosocial, and educational needs of patients and families.
Assess and maintain unit-specific competency through the organization and coordination of orientation, competency review and new education.


Position Requirements

Formal Education / Training:
1. Licensed by the State of Tennessee.
2. Earned a nursing diploma or degree from a college or university.
3. ACLS certification or agree to obtain within 6 months of hire.
4. OCN certification within two year of employment is required; within one year of hire is preferred.
5. A minimum of three years Oncology experience.
6. Demonstrated leadership potential and positive communication skills.

Workplace Experience:
Patient Care Delivery in Oncology Department

Equipment and Skills Training:
Standard patient care equipment for services provided.  The ability to work well under pressure, to function dependently and independently and to be flexible in applying basic nursing knowledge to a variety of setting.  Equipment:  Network Computer System, Pneumatic Tube System, Epidural Catheter Pumps, Omnicell Medication System; Telemetry; Safe Patient Handling Equipment; IV Pumps; PCA Pumps; AT&T Language line.

Physical Environment:
A medical/surgical unit with patient population ranging from less than one year of age> ninety-nine years of age.

Physical Effort:
1.  Able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
2.  Able to stand/work for up to twelve hours a day.
3.  Able to lift with assistance up to 250 lbs.


Key Results

  1. Assists in organizing, directing, and administering services in order to provide the level of care required by current medical and nursing standards.
  2. Maintains continuing quality assessment and improvement of patient care delivery and patient safety activities. Collaborates in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising, and monitoring performance improvement activities.
  3. Communicates with the Director of Oncology on the activities/issues pertinent to the operation of the Oncology Department.  Gives accurate information.
  4. Participates in policy decisions that affect services.  Makes recommendations for policy and procedure development, revisions, and assists with implementation in conjunction with the Director of Oncology.
  5. Assists in planning the yearly budget by utilizing input from the physicians and staff for requirements for personnel, supplies, and equipment.
  6. Practices cost controls to insure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from the approved budget.  Participates in corrective actions for variances.
  7. Assists with the coordination of the employee selection process, training, and staff development, work assignments, performance competencies, disciplinary actions, and merit evaluations.
  8. Recommends the modification, addition, or deletion of staffing plans, and nursing care delivery models to insure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide patient care coverage.
  9. Coordinates staffing to insure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets.
  10. Insures that professional relationships are maintained with patients, their families and friends, clergy, and other interested groups in the community.
  11. Responds to and communicates Patient Satisfaction Scores to staff.  Implements process improvement activities.
  12. Participates with other health care teams to coordinate compliance with regulatory agencies.
  13. Involved in all aspects of data abstraction and process improvement.
  14. Handles, transports, stores, prepares, administers medications/solutions safely and in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
